Exotic Longhair kittens are a product of outcrossing the Persian with American Shorthair cats, a distinct and popular breed, in the 1950s. Exotic Longhairs and Persians look physically are identical but the Persian has a pure Persian bloodline.

Since the Exotic Longhair has some American Shorthair personality characteristics in them, there are slight personality differences between the two. The American Shorthair is known to be a very pleasant companion cat. They are easy going, placid and a very loving cat that will attach themselves to all members of the family. This also applies to the personality of the Exotic Shorthair. They are both equally affectionate, but the Exotic Longhair tends to be a little more social and active than the Persian.

Exotic Longhairs have a hunting instinct from their American Shorthair ancestors. Play sessions with a wand toy and prey-like lures can be fun for them.

Exotic Longhairs enjoy lap time and naps, but they also need entertainment to keep their minds active. They can be kept busy with catnip mice and other small toys.

The Exotic Longhair is less vocal than the Persian. In other words, they make less noise.

One website dedicated to the Persian states that the Exotic Longhair is more comfortable on the ground than the Persian, so the Exotic Longhair is less inclined to climb and rest in high places.

Why do many refer to Exotic Longhair kittens as Persian kittens?

Mon Chéri Dunkin’, a chocolate bicolor Exotic Longhair, is all grown up in Bradenton, Florida with Chelsea H. watching Netflix together… or one of them is watching Netflix!

One major American cat Association, TICA (The International Cat Association), considers the Exotic Longhair as the same as the Persian and both are registered as Persian. Therefore on our website, as well as many others, a kitten may be listed as a Persian or Exotic Longhair although we want to make sure you understand their is a slight technical difference. Our kittens are Exotic Longhair kittens as their parents are an Exotic Shorthair crossed with Persians, although we may refer to them as either.

Mon Chéri Peanut, a chocolate tabby Exotic Longhair kitten is happy in Seattle, Washington and has bonded with his dog brother.

Though Exotic Longhair kittens are quite friendly, they require gentle handling, which means no roughhousing or grabbing from young children. They get along great with kind, respectful kids, but would rather be stroked and admired than engage in strenuous activities.

Exotic Longhair kittens also enjoy the company of other pets such as cats and dogs. They love to sprawl out in favorite spot in the home with good vantage points to keep an eye on the goings-on in the household, be it a plush chair or sun-filled window ledge. Exotic Longhair kittens and Exotic Longhair cats are usually homebodies. It’s best to keep them indoors to prevent overheating, fleas, or things getting tangled into their coat.

Both Exotic Shorthair kittens and Exotic Longhair cats love their human families, but they don’t mind being left alone for short periods of time as long as they are in their own homes where they feel comfortable and safe.

To manage your Exotic Longhair kittens food intake, feed measured meals twice a day instead of filling up the food bowl all the time. Young Exotic Longhair kittens should eat three times a day.
